Character: Mercedes
Age: Unknown, physically looks no older then fourteen or fifteen. (Odin Sphere has a very horrible relationship with time and ages in that you never really realize such things exist.)

Background:
Due to how the entire game is set up, following the actual timeline of events can be a bit confusing. This is because each character has their own ‘book’ that tells their story and thus only their side of things, and when one plays through them in order by book many events are out of order or do not make sense at first unless you realize some events are happening at the same time as others. Luckily, despite the obscurity of this game there were dedicated fans that created timelines or even wrote the story in the actual order of events as they happened. This of course takes away a bit of the dramatic flair the game’s story telling has, since certain events gain new meaning as you go from one pov to another.

As such I will give two links in regards to this section to illustrate both aspects of the game.

This LINK details Mercedes’s book and thus every aspect that she personally had a hand in. While this LINK is a good retelling of the entire game, including the history that happens before the game and that one only finds out about via NPC dialog, random text items found in treasure chests, or hinted about through plot relevant events.

Personality:
Mercedes is young and sheltered. In the beginning this also meant she was a complete brat to most everyone because she hadn't had to really grow up before hand. Ingway sums it up eloquently; "You are so spoiled...You always assume that somebody will come along to take care of things for you." It's a very accurate assessment of Mercedes before she grows up during her story. As the only child of Queen Elfaria she had no need to do anything for herself and the subjects of her mother's realm would happily take care of any problems she could come across. Spending an idyllic childhood where war and strife were things others suffered and remained remote and unable to touch her within the realm of her forest kingdom. This also makes her naive and unprepared for the world at large as she has none of the practical skills and knowledge most others gain from dealing with a world that can be cruel.

This glass castle comes shattering down when her mother comes back from a war gravely injured and only has enough time to say goodbye and implore Mercedes to 'Be a Queen' and not seek revenge.

As if coping with the reality that is death and that sorrow can touch her life, Mercedes is also now burdened with the mantle of the ruler of an entire nation. For a young girl who had spent most of her life thinking such would not happen for a long time to come, well the shock
